Every week I grab 2-3 boxes from a local bank in the US. Most of the time, they are bank rolled.

This week's haul from a box (50 rolls) of each…

  • Pennies (N.F. STRING & SON, INC. HARRISBURG, PA., U.S.A. rolls)
    • Wheat cents (13) - the first half the box only produced a single wheat, but then things got a bit more interesting
      • 1911 - worn almost flat to where I could barely make out the second 1 in the date; wouldn't grade higher than Fair
      • 1944,44-D,45-D,48-D,49-D,52,2x52-D,55,56-D,2x58-D
    • Canadian (6)
      • 1932 - don't often see George V's portrait hunting US coin rolls
      • 1972,78,88,93,99

  • Dimes (all customer rolled)
    • 1977-D clipped planchet
    • Canadian (3):
      • 1977,94,11

  • Quarters (no-name bank rolls)
    • 2017-P Ozark Waterways - die chip / snow on the roof
    • 2019-W San Antonio - this is the 3rd week in a row I find a W quarter with this design
    • 2022-P Dr. Sally Ride - die chip / drooling Washington
    • Canadian (1)
      • 2009

No silver, no proofs.

HoH

Just a couple days ago I got some rolls of dollar coins ( all bank wrapped) and instead of a dollar I got a Chuck E Chesse token.

Yeah, the last time I got dollar rolls, there was an adult “Heads I win, tails you lose” token in there.

HoH

Another week, another update.

    • Pretty much a skunk box. A decent amount of copper, but all the wheat cents had been pulled out
    • Most rolls were off by a few cents (anywhere from 48 to 55), producing an excess of 78 cents for the box
    • Canadian cents (7): 1973, 89, 91, 93, 97, 2x 2006 -- I guess whoever had gone through this box was not interested in them

HoH
  • Quarters (no name bank rolls)
    • 2023-P Bessie Coleman -- It's the 1st one I've come across. Was released in Feb and, as usual, it took about 3 months for P coins to start showing up in circulated coin rolls here. The only exception to that was the 2018 Minnesota quarter. Right from the start and to this day the vast majority of the ones I see have the P mintmark.

    • (ND) (P) Buffalo
    • Pre-1960 (17): 2x 39, 42, 2x 46, 46-D, 48-D, 49, 52-D, 2x 57-D, 58-D, 59, 4x 59-D

Finding 2 W quarters is nice, but already had these and there are 5 other designs I'm still missing…

HoH

HoH

Hey since you can get this rolls daily could I buy some

Sorry, don't really wanna deal with shipping outside the US.

HoH

Same story as last week. :( I'll have to lay off quarters and pennies for a while and hope they get through that pallet and go back to circulated coins.

HoH

Taking a break from quarters for a bit.

      • quite a variety of dates and mintmarks; might have been a collection dump
      • one of 55-Ds was really nice, barely any wear, w/ light golden toning. Probably taken out of a mint set.
    • Canadian (1): 1987

HoH

No bad way to get coins.

Tried my luck with this as well with two rolls (50 coins total) from a German central bank branch:

9 German:

N#2169 D

N#2162 D

N#5053 A

N#53570 G

N#69263 G

N#139058 F

N#193506 D

N#267621 J & G

And one Italian:

N#28324

Also lots of different standard circulating coins from different countries, but except one very nice 2018 Italian nothing I'll bother keeping or adding to the swap list.

I don't think I'll do this often as I'll be busy slowly spending 2 euro coins now, but every now and then good fun :)

I've been doing this with Australian coins. My best hit was the $1 2016 Decimal Currency Changeover coin. Nice low mintage.  N#79177

Being able to snag silver quarters at will (more or less) would be amazing. They are at least 10 bucks a pop in these parts.

At this point, it's far more “less” than “more”. Lucky to find one in 10 boxes.

I know no new ones have been struck for many years, but are Canadian 1 cents still used in circulation?

Not really. When banks get them, they send them in to the Mint which melts them. If you have some, you can still spend it anywhere, but why waste your and everyone else's time? If you don't have any on hand, they round the total. So, if the total is $1.62 or $3.36, there's no use of pennies, the total will be rounded down to $1.60 and $3.35 anyway. But if you still decide to pay with them, the business sends them to the bank, which of course sends them to the mint for melting.

Good evening,

@Houseofham , how long does it take you to search a box of each denomination?

I used to love searching, but it is getting harder and harder to find time.

It used to take me about an hour for a box of halfs, 3 hrs for a box of quarters. Never have I searched a box of dimes or pennies though.

That sounds about right, though with all the breaks I take, it takes longer, plus re-rolling takes another 15-20 minutes per box. Usually, I search while listening to something in the background, like news, an audio book, or something on YouTube.

I've stopped searching dimes now - too hard on my eyes. I still search pennies because wheat cents are easy to spot  and there's more foreign coins that size and only a few zinc cents worth scoping. Dollars I only hunt maybe twice a year - there is no silver to find and I don't like the alloy they chose for them.

These coins were not released directly into circulation and could only be purchased, either individually or as rolls, from the Mint. They often end up in circulation when those who purchased rolls spend any extras they don't feel like keeping. So, they are relatively uncommon, but not rare, and barely have any value above face.

    • 2019-W American Memorial Park

I was already beginning to think I'd have to run to the bank Saturday morning and pick up another box or two, or I'd have nothing to post about, but the last 2 rolls saved the hunt AND that was the last 2019-W design I was missing and it's in great condition. Still missing 3 Ws from 2020, though, so the hunt continues.

Pretty average hunt overall.

Total hunted from March 2023 to March 2024:
pennies - 18 boxes
nickels - 31 box
dimes - 3 boxes + 20 rolls
quarters - 37 boxes
halves - 11 boxes
dollars - 22 rolls

If you add up the weight of all these boxes, I have literally gone through a ton of change!

Don't worry, we can look for pennies in boxes even in the center of Europe.

I'm curious, how much does one have to pay for a box of pennies? I imagine it's not going to be that cheap to ship a box of coins to Europe.

  • Halves (bank rolls)
    • NIFCs (14): 02-D, 03-D, 03-P, 04-P, 05-D, 3x 05-P, 06-D, 10-D, 2x 10-P, 16-P, 18-D
    • newer: 3x 21-D, 21-P, 2x 22-D, 2x 23-P
    • misc
      • 71-D counter-stamped with initials C (left) J (right) of Kennedy's portrait
      • a roll with a quarter in it – so, got shorted 25 cents

Pretty typical results. Plenty of NIFCs and no silver.

  • Quarters (bank rolls)
    • A couple very nice bicentennial quarters (the yellow color on the left is just a reflection from the overhead light; both coins are blast white)

    • a very nice 1986-P – hard to find in circulation in high grade
    • 2019-W San Antonio Missions

This is the 12th San Antonio Missions W I have found. Maybe I can make a roll of them one day. 😁

  • Quarters (bank rolls)
    • 1978-D UNC
    • 1983-D AU (very close to UNC but not quite)
    • misc finds
      • there were a few with holes, like someone had a quarter necklace
      • counter-struck 1999-D New Jersey – someone got a bit carried away with their creativity

So, no Ws this time, but a couple nicer older quarters. There was a lot of 2023-D Maria Tallchief quarters, but no 2024 Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray yet, even though they released over a month ago.
