Canadian coins

Hello,

I have a few questions about Canadian coins used in the pre-1908. In 1908 the Royal Canadian mint was formed; before this all Canadian coins were minted in the UK. During the first few years of this time (eg. between 1858 - 1870's), were British coins circulated around Canada as well as the Canadian coins or was it just the Canadian's coins? Also what was used as coins during the period in the 1860's where there were no Canadian coins minted? Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards

In the pre-confederation and early confederation period, a lot of the circulating coinage would have been American. The $10 US gold piece was actually legal tender in the United Province of Canada, while silver US coins were generally taken at par in commercial transactions, although banks tended to discount them. Other coins circulating in the colonies included British shillings and Spanish silver pieces.
For copper, bank tokens based on the pound/shilling/pence system continued to circulate long after decimalization, along with provincial and US cents.
