I've got a proof coin I'd like to get an image of.  The only problem is that the coin is so dang shiny it reflects my camera in the negative space.  Any tips?

You can get a flash diffuser for your camera (if it's SLR) or try using something similar on your flash to avoid unwanted glare.

Wasn't the glare I was worried about, it was reflection.

I just use my smart phone with the flash turned off, it has a tap to focus feature and I set the resolution so it was not on full. I crop the image using my phone and e-mail it to my computer. I am quite pleased with the results. Heres an example.

If I don't get it to work first time I just turn it and angle it to get good focus.

flash diffuser should take care of reflections

So would using a flash diffuser give it sort of a frosted look instead of mirrored?

The site that tony posted is nice. take a look.

The diffuser will divide the light and soften the glare from the flash. But if you can have good lighting then better to avoid flash all together.

Checking out the site supplied by Tony.

I took the coin photo for this 20 CHF Globi commemorative...

Not having the other stuff on-hand I tried just shooting it.  The black of the camera actually came out kinda cool looking albeit it has the appearance of an enameled coin.
