Is the UK the first country to ever have one design over a number of coins??

  I think it is.  :)

What do people think of this design. Personally I would happily add it to room 101.

I think it's cool when you put the coins together it makes a design, but I also think each individual coin should have some signifance on its own.  For example the 20p coin is just an image of a lion's behind.  What will collectors in 300 years think when they find one of these coins and it just has some random half-image?

I wonder if the UK will get rid of 1p and 2p coins within the next decade.  The lowest value NZ coin is 10 cents which is roughly equivalent to 5p, so it is possible.  If they got rid of them, the shield would be incomplete and I imagine the design would have to be changed again.
As a foreigner (not British, not living in Britain) I found the idea stupid and the design terrible per individual coins. I tend to treat coins one by one, collect and keep them that way also. I never completed this set, and I will not keep it as a shield when I do, but as separate coins.  I learned that they form a shield months later after I started adding them to my collection, and even that by mistake. I think a coin design should fit inside its flan to be understandable. Otherwise it is an off flan coin, an error; and here a deliberately done one. Why should I I care if several coins coming together forms a British royal coat of arms? I think the joke is lost on all foreigners not living in UK.
As a Briton, I like the design, but I do think they should make a coin folder for collecting them by circulation, not buying.

I found this one; it comes with a £1 coin only, and has six places for the collector to add their own coins.

I hate the new style coinage, I want Britannia back on the penny !

I'm with you, Hippaforalkus, I like the design. I like the way it has literally broken the boundaries of coin design and if people don't get the fact that the young designer was thinking "outside the box" then frankly, it is their loss. I find it quite amusing to hear people's reactions when they find out about the overall theme and how the coins come together - it's almost as if they are annoyed at being made to feel foolish. In my opinion, this is what the Royal Mint should be doing, i.e. coming up with creative designs for, and producing the nations circulating currency, and not spewing out all this commercialised, commemorative crap  :P

I like the design too. Something fresh and interesting.

I have mixed feelings about them. I would say 70 percent of time I like them, it's different and therefore rather interesting.
Then again 30 percent of time I don't like it and think it's kind of silly.

Most of the time I like it though, and the fact it makes us talk about them also shows that there is interest into them, like or don't like.

They certainly are art. That I do agree with any day. My opinion of them often depends on my mood. Like with many artworks.
I hated it when I first saw it as I loved the traditional coin design of british coins. But over time I got used to it. Now I find it interesting and nice when it is joined together, but I would like to see the design just for one year, for example, as an interesting refreshment.

Well, if there was this possibility, I would certainly prefer it to current design!

britannia has never been on the penny since decimalisation?
That's why he wants it back!
make do with the 50p like everyone else has to?
It's not on the 50p anymore ? I don't understand why you're being an  quite frankly..
I like them, something new and out of the box. But the older pennys is one of the first coins i got. And i do love Britannia.
It is, what it is, or is it.
