1,004 new users joined Numista in January 2015, increasing the total member tally by 2.2%. This is about 30% more new members than the previous month, and the largest monthly gain since January 2014!
In comparison, Numista added 1,022 new members in January 2014, and 1,214 new members in January 2013.
This month's new members added 109,000 coins into their collections.
66.3% of these users have not yet entered a coin into their Numista collection.
989 of this month's new members selected a nation. 97 nations had at least one new member. 184 are American, 162 are French, 64 are Indian, 54 are Canadian, 46 are Belgian, and 37 are British.
We also had a spike in Lithuanian registrations this month, probably due to their adoption of the euro.
1.5% of this month's users still have not selected a nation for their profile.
The first users from the Azores, Dominica, Sao Tome & Principe, Spitsbergen and Westarctica joined Numista!
Albania, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Botswana, British Indian Ocean Territories, Cameroon, Congo (DR), Curacao, Djibouti, Dominican Republic, Georgian Republic, Gibraltar, Honduras, Iceland, Jersey, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mozambique, New Caledonia, Palestine, Paraguay, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Tanzania, Trinidad & Tobago and Zambia each gained one new member.
63% of this month's new users belong to one of the Top Ten nations on Numista by user count (France, USA, India, Canada, UK, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Australia). Switzerland passed Argentina for 18th rank.
Of the top ten nations, Italy grew the fastest this month (5.7% increase), while France grew the slowest (2.7%). The USA grew by 3.3%.
Tanzania added their tenth member!
User Participation scores for this month (How many new users are actually cataloging coins here):
68% Portugal (wow!)
54% Philippines
47% Germany
46% Spain
43% Russia
41% Switzerland
40% Romania
34% France, Italy, USA
32% UK
31% Australia
30% Canada
24% Belgium
17% India
13% South Africa

It has always surprised me how little presence of the countries of the Far East is in Numista. Only China is one fifth of the world population. What percentage of Chinese users are in Numista?

Please note that a lot of countries have limited Internet access to a lot of people where international Web pages are concerned. In China too a lot of people can actually not access Numista.
How many members do we have from China?
Thanks for statistics again Cerulean.
High numbers in January.... Peoples new years resolutions to organize their collections in 2015... Hehe.
Also great to hear about spike in amount of Lithuanian members.

As of 31 January 2015, here are the membership totals for Asia:
1727 India
242 Malaysia
200 Philippines
80 Bangladesh
77 Indonesia
65 China
58 Singapore
56 Japan
45 Vietnam
44 Thailand
35 Sri Lanka
23 Hong Kong
20 Nepal
17 South Korea
17 Taiwan
14 Brunei
4 Macau
3 Bhutan
3 Cambodia
2 East Timor
2 Mongolia
2 Burma/Myanmar
1 Laos
1 North Korea
I am not surprised by the low Chinese membership tally, given the existence of the Great Firewall:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship_in_China
Think of what the Numista community would be like if there were 1,000 Chinese accounts here tomorrow!
Frankly, I am very curious why the Japanese and South Korean totals are not higher. Their combined membership is lower than Chile! I can't see a reasonable explanation for this, except for language barriers. Perhaps Japanese and Korean collectors have a Numista of their own somewhere else?

Here's another way to look at the data.
I divided each country's population by the number of Numista members. The result is the country's population per member.
For example, there is one Numista user for every 733,000 Indians, 55,000 Australians, or 10,000 Belgians.
The lower a country appears on this list, the more popular Numista is among that country. We can infer that this also correlates to the popularity of coin collecting for each nation.
Here's just the Top Ten:
733231 India
112146 Italy
78222 Spain

55317 Australia

Super interesting statistics, thanks.
Where are the Nigerians you ask?
The lack of coins in there might contribute to the lack of coin collectors...
Generally you need coins in circulation to make people slightly interested about them in the first place.
Correct me If I am wrong... But my Nigerian workmate went there for holiday, I asked him to keep me some coins and he said they doing use them there. Only notes, he said...

I have counted 93 Kiwi memberships. Right now I see 37 pins on the map. Odds are less than ten of them are active.

Great statistics Cerulean, thanks for preparing them monthly! It looks like India is the number one country of collectors!

I hardly believe there are any members from either Westarctica, South Georgia & Sandwich Islands, Pitcairn Islands, North Korea. Mostly bacause Westarctica and South Georgia & Sandwich Islands are unihabited, Pitcairn Islands simply got 52 inhabitants - probably non coin collectors, but who knows? And North Korea says itself. So, I'm sorry to say this, but the stats are false

Stats are just showing what people have chosen as their location. If they lie, stats lie.
But even so general picture of stats should be about there.

Numista is not blocked in China. There must be a different explanation.

I find this monthly stats very interesting. Thank you Cerulean for doing this faithfully every month. As swapping coins is one of the main things we do here, would it be possible to also include stats like how many swaps were completed in the month, how many coins were swapped in those swaps and how many members took part in swapping?

There was a statistician named George E. P. Box, and he had a saying: "Essentially, all models are flawed, but some are useful."
