World coins chat: Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic declared independence from Haiti in 1844 and is basically the successor state of the Spanish colony of Santo Domingo that Haiti had annexed in 1822. Juan Pablo Duarte is seen as one of the most important founding fathers from the independence era and features on several Dominican coins. The Dominican Republic is not to be confused with the former British East Caribbean island and now independent country Dominica.

Right after independence, the Dominican Republic introduced the Dominican Peso (RD$ or DOP) at par with the Haitian Gourde it replaced and was worth roughly the same as other Pesos or the US Dollar. It was subdivided in 8 Reales, and coins denominated in Reales where in circulation. In 1877, the Peso was decimalised into 100 Centavos. In 1890, the Franco Dominicano was introduced alongside the Peso at par with the French Franc woth the goal of joining the Latin Monetary Union. These Franco coins are pretty rare.

The Franco plan did not materialize and a new Peso series was introduced in 1897, but with much lower silver content than before. By then the Peso was worth roughly $0.40. In 1905 the Peso was replaced by the US Dollar at a rate of 5 to one, implying another 50% devaluation.

In 1937, a new Peso Oro was introduced which was at parity with the US Dollar. From 1963 it started floating, initially quite stable but the currency gradually lost value over time. The biggest drop was in 2004 after a severe banking crisis and by now there are 45 Pesos to the US Dollar.

The Dominican economy is highly dollarised, which means that local currency is not always used everywhere, but in sufficient amounts to see coins and banknotes circulating. The coins are not very common. Even the modern ones are not in every bargain bin. Despite that I own a bit more than 20 types, all of which are less than 60 years old.
