World coins chat: British Virgin Islands

7 posts
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a British overseas territory in the northeastern Caribbean. Originally settled by the Dutch, the British took control of the islands after the third Anglo-Dutch war.

The BVI's main source of revenue is in financial offshoring, similar to the Caymans. The official currency used is the US Dollar. There are coins that bear the name British Virgin Islands but these are no more than collector's issues. Nice for the country collector but it won't count for me.
Just remember that they were part of the British West Indies and as part of this former Overseas entity they shared coins with all these actual and former British territories in Caribbean Islands , with British Guyana and, for a decade, with Jamaica.

You are absolutely right. The BVI were the first to withdraw from the BWI$ in 1961. Will write an article about the BWI$ soon.
Wait... There is the BG&BWI£ & the BWI$ before the EC$ still on use

But Guyana is still so far away. What to do? ☺
This should be considered as another territory maybe

All you can find from the BVI are Franklin Mint proofs or BU issues. Twice now I have found a BVI coin in a mixed bulk bin - both issues impaired somehow. Lucky finds, but not great bargains because the proofs and BUs can be found for just a couple dollars in flawless condition.
