Zambia is located in southern Africa north of Zimbabwe and south of the DR Congo. It also borders Tanzania, Mozambique, Angola and the Caprivi strip of Namibia.
Because of its location between Angola and Mozambique, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to explore the area. In the 19th century, the famous explorer David Livingstone travelled through the area and discovered Victoria falls. The former capital of Zambia is named Livingstone.
However, it was Cecil Rhodes' British South Africa Company (BSAC) that first set out to achieve deals with local tribe chiefs to establish mining rights and a protectorate. Rhodes ultimately used force to reach his ambitions and around 1900 the two protectorates of Northwest-Rhodesia-Barotseland and Northeast-Rhodesia were established. In 1911 these were merged into Northern Rhodesia with the same borders as present-day Zambia. From 1923 South Rhodesian Pounds replaced homeland currency at par.
Between 1953 and 1963 Northern Rhodesia was part of the Federation of Rhodesia & Nyasaland and in 1964 independence was granted from Britain and the name changed into Zambia. The Zambian Pound replaced the Rhodesia & Nyasaland Pound at par until Zambia decimalised with the Kwacha for 10 Shillings in 1968. The exchange rate of the Kwacha dropped from $1.40 to $0.83 but stayed somewhat stable until president Kaunda's policies (he features on Zambian coins) of overspending caused a sharp drop of the Kwacha's value in the 1990's. In 2011, a new Kwacha replaced the old for 1000 to 1. Currently there are 7 new Kwacha's in a US Dollar.
Zambian Pound coins are quite hard to find.
