Mali's colonization started in 1886, which finally became the French Sudan in 1890. In 1895, French Sudan is part of the French West Africa. In 1898, France reached its full extension of the French Sudan colony. In 1958 French Sudan became an autonomous republic and merged the following year with Senegal, Upper-Volta and Dahomey to form the Mali Federation, which became independant one year later. The following months leaded to a split in the federation, making the Mali Republic independant. In 1968 a dictatorship started after a military putsch leading up to a new one in 1991. The new ruler decided to restore democracy and a new president is elected.

The situation remained peaceful until 2012, when Northern Mali became invaded by MLNA (Tuareg rebels) and Jihadist groups. After a war, during which a new putsch occurred, Northern Mali declared its independance as Azawad and Tuareg were betrayed by Jihadists, France decided to help Mali restoring its territorial integrity and kicked out Jihadists with CEDEAO (union of West African countries, which includes the BCEAO zone but not only) and Tuareg help (mainly using their knowledge of battlefields in Northern Mali). Since then Tuareg rebels are negociating with the central power. Despite this pacification of Northern Mali, some Jihadist cells remained undercover and succeded a terrorist gunshot in Bamako, Mali capital city, in March 2015, targetting European expatriates.

Before its independance, Mali used either French Franc and CFA Franc. In 1920 were made 2 notgelds of 5 and 10 centimes for the High-Senegal-Niger union, which contained French Sudan, under the name of the Chambers of Commerce of Kayes. In 1961 they decided to launch their own currency and left the Western African CFA zone, making aluminium coins of 5 francs, 10 francs and 25 francs. Their currency weakened a lot, and a new series was made in 1975 (50 francs & 100 francs) and 1976 (10 francs and 25 francs). The 5 francs was abandoned. Finally in 1984 Mali joined the BCEAO and took back the CFA franc.
