World Coins Chat: Senegal

1 post
Senegal was 1st discovered by Portuguese navigators, with their 1st settlement in Goree Island. They were also based in actual Rufisque, Saly, Joal & Ziguinchor. They were challenged by other explorators from the Dutch Republic, from UK and from France. Dutch tried to settle in Goree, and later British and French fought each other to take control of Senegal, dispute which was solved in 1763. French colons focused in the coast up to 1854 when the local governor colonized the remaining part of the actual country. Since then its history is linked with the French West Africa until its independance in 1960. Senegal is the most stable country and more considered democratic than most former West Africa countries, even taking count of troubles in 1968 (following the French movement of May 68), a rebellion in Casamance and border torubles with Mauritania.

Senegal currency has always been the currency of French West Africa and BCEAO (French Franc, CFA Franc). The only known circulating coinage for Senegal was a series of notgelds made for the cities of Dakar, Rufisque and Ziguinchor. Kayes is not in modern Senegal but in modern Mali, even listed as Senegal because of the territory name (High-Senegal & Niger, which mainly refers to Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger). Other Senegal coins are uncirculating as made of gold or silver.
