For the 1942I there are two year lines, one with wide date, the other with narrow date.
I looked at a lot of coins but don't see a difference in the date. However, I see a big difference in the denticles: short wide denticles versus long narrow denticles:

The dates on these two coins look the same:

Anyone who has a picture of a narrow date and wide date for the 1942I?
I love your discovery of the denticle diagnostic! At first blush I thought the dates look identical but dont you see some serif and digit tip differences? For example the serif on the 1 looks straight on the one date but seems curved in the other. The 4s look very different. I see where the downstroke can be seen overlapping on one but not the other... Are these coins in similar condition? Love the denticles tho...

I also saw the curve on the 1 and some other very little differences. But don't forget, the picture is an enlargement. At real size these differences are as good as insignificant.
The difference in shape of the denticals however can be seen with the naked eye (for the young ones) and with a very simple magnifying glass for the older ones like me.
A different question about your coins,
do they say .HALF PENNY. or HALF .PENNY. ?
I think the description "dots before and after PENNY" is wrong

Indeed, you're completely right. I hadn't noticed it yet (sometimes you read what you know there must be written in stead of reading what there actually is written). So there must be "dot before and after HALF PENNY" or "dot before and after denomination".
I don't know if a change request will fix this. I already made a change request for a similar coin (https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces1561.html) but in stead of changing the comment on the year lines they put my remark at the comments sector on the coin page (see there). But that's not the way it should be done and it's not motivating for new change requests.
