Free coins from unexpected source!

I picked up some free coins from a really unexpected source today....a bank.

I went in, cap in hand, trying to extend my mortgage to get some cash to get our windows replaced with double glazing. On the application form I had to list my assets, so I listed my coin collection. When the manager read the form he asked "Is that New Zealand coins or world coins?" when I replied that it was world coins he said "Want some more? We get in a whole lot of foreign currency and we can't do anything with it, Hold on there I'll go and get you some" B.:8D
Very nice touch from your visit, did you manage to sort out your application and was there any good coins in there?

Yeah, I own over half my property now, and my wages are not too bad, so the topup was no real issue.

The coins were all modern US, AUs and Euro coins, nothing overly special, but a really nice touch from the guy.
Thats awesome, l have asked many banks about world coins and they look at me like l am crazy!
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Looking for pre 1783 coins
That is awesome! Years ago in university I was a bank teller. One of my jobs was to roll and bag coins. Every year after spring break it was amazing how many folks would just include their change from Mexico and caribbean nations in their deposits. We never counted them and they never wanted them back..

That's so cool! Even if they're just current circulation coins you can round out your collection with some nice options I'm sure. Were there any in particular that were a surprise?
A surprise more from context. We dont circulate bimetals so when you find them in bags of nickels and quarters it was cool. Probably the neatest thing I found was a US large cent that someone snuck into a roll of half dollars.

When I ask bank tellers what they do with foreign coins, most say they throw them in the trash.

Really? That's tragic!
I might have to check things out at my bank.
Lucky you! Good score!

Next time I go to the bank, I know what I am going to say!
I love coins
I hear that a lot of money exchangers also get weird coins or notes from countries nobody ever goes to, and they’ll be happy for you to take it off their hands. I’ve never tried, mainly because I suck at asking weird questions to strangers. I really should try some day.

My church also gets weird coins from their donations boxes, mainly Chinese or Japanese or Korean junk (from a HKer’s perspective) but I’ve seen some Hungarian and Swedish in there.

LOL, me too! Once I were at a small Chinese take out place in town and saw that in their tip jar were a silver coin from the 50's. I so wanted to take it an rrplace with another coin, but I felt so stupid so I just left it there. 😳

One thousand times yes! Saw a couple of rare years in an airport donation jar. KEY DATES.
Not sure why I never thought of doing this. It seems so obvious after the fact. Might just have to give it a go here in the near future.

Entertaining story indeed, but how is it related to free coins?
