Medieval coin identification needed

6 posts
I have gone through all coins of right size and weight but no luck.

Please, If anybody spots where the coin is from, or can point me in the direction of a resource for medieval coins like this, I would very much appreciate it.

Coin is silver (or billon), weighs exactly 1g and has a diameter of between 14 and 15 mm.

One side has a strange face on it, and other side has a guy with a strange hat, eating a leg of chicken and holding a jug of ale - sort of - or something quite different.

I've very few things to say about this coin, which seems totally unknown for me, however these dimensions are similar to a medieval Denier, a global name for most similar coinage from Western nations.

Wow - very interesting coin. I would love to find out what it is.
First of all, i think the first pic is upside down. Turned that way, it looks like some guy with a beard - a lot less stranger face.
Secondly, maybe the guy in the second pic is holding an (olive?) branch ? He might be someone from the Byzantine sphere of influence in the middle ages ?
Or maybe a bishop or something else similar.

Hello,

Heretic Cata was right for the rotation:

Some Münster Bistum pfennig:

Probably yours :

The bishop is holding a crozier at right hand and a book at left hand.
This one is Everhard von Diest, 1275-1301 (bishop of Munster http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/bishop/bdiest.html)

But some identify it another way ex. http://www.ma-shops.com/olding/item.php5?id=232504&lang=en for Lippe Delmot.

See also this other one http://www.ma-shops.com/olding/item.php5?id=263397&lang=en

I am no expert and have no catalogue for this period but I guess we are pretty close B) with the Münster pfennig 13th century. You should ask confirmation to a german forum (ex. numismatikforum.de).

Wow. Wow. Eh - did I mention wow?

Thank you all, and especially André. I'm really really happy now. There is a world of difference between owning (and holding in your hand) a lump of silver and a piece of history.

I will try to get a confirmation from numismatikforum.de :-) Try out these old german words I learnt way back :-)

Thanks again!
