Wonder Women

While the "Alphabet Game" is still going on, how about we start posting coins with women on them :). Only rule is don't post consecutively and try not to post the same person consecutively either. The person can be either a deity, political person, ruler, etc. I'll start with the following:

Roman Imperial: Aelia Flaccilla (378-383 CE) AE Follis, Antioch (Sear 20616; RIC IX 61)

Obv: AEL FLAC-CILLA AVG; diademed & draped bust right
Rev: SALVS REI-PVBLICAE; Victory seated right, inscribing Chi-Rho onto shield set on column, T in right field, ANTB in exergue

Coins around the globe have her on them.

Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Looking for pre 1783 coins
Surely that is not an actual portrait, and I do not own the coin - I belive only few exists, but it probably belongs here. This is late 10th century Bohemian Denar of Duchess Emma, second wife of Boleslaus II. You can actually even read Emma Regina on the coin.

And are favo US
It is, what it is, or is it.

It is, what it is, or is it.
I like this lady ...

described as 'Libertine with a headscarf'
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces19143.html

My cropped profile picture; my uncirculated 1916 1 Franc. The republican design is called 'la Semeuse'(the Sower); widely believed to have inspired the American Walking Liberty series.

But this one's more interesting;

1918 R Italian Eritrea 1 Tallero, designed to look like and replace the Maria Theresa Thaler in he Middle East
"Winged Liberty" or "Mariane's head". Don't know who, or what, this lady was though, but the French sure loves her! :O:D

I love those French colonial designs, ngdawa! I could imagine doing a whole album just of those.
And what about lady liberty and all her glorious incarnations...

One of my favorites is Coyolxauhqui, from Aztec lore:
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces2580.html

She, after a long and sordid story, became the moon.
She is also depicted on the 10,000 pesos / 10 Nuevos Pesos notes:

It is not pretty. But it is pretty metal.

Arabia Felix: Himyarites and Sabaeans (ca. 3rd Century BC) AR Drachm (Munro-Hay 1.4i2)

Obv: Helmeted head of Athena right; Sabaean "N" (mark of value) on cheek.
Rev: Owl standing right, head facing; olive sprig and crescent behind, AΘE before, monogram below.

"Souvenir Peso" first coin issued by Cuba, to fund the revolution for Independence from Spain.
1897 coins show "Souvenir" instead of "1 Peso" cause provisional government, in the US didn't want to have problems with the US government, who could refuse to mint coins from a revolution movement against a country they have diplomatic relations (Spain).
1898 coins show "1 Peso" owing to the change in the relations between the US and Spain.

The image represents the Cuban Republic and is based on a pictue of Leonor Molina, cousin of one of the main revolution leaders, and active participating in the movement. Leonor is the only woman who represented Cuban Republic in coins.
Just 10 options: you understand binary, or you don't.

Is good this thread be active again after 2 years.

I know it's about coins, but will add banknotes cause we did not have them in the site when this discussion started.

The image is an allegory representing the Constitution, as series of banknotes was commemorative on the Centenary of first Uruguayan Constitution, 1830-1930; Face values of the series were 1 Peso, 5 Pesos and 10 Pesos.

As said, the image is an allegory, but face is copied from a picture from Adela Herrera Mac Lean de Gutiérrez, who was a distinguished lady of the Montevideo high society, woman considered on the top beauties at the times.

Later, Adela's image was used on some banknotes from France and French colonies.

The image on 1 Peso banknote is not copied, but created, based on the same person.

The infamous Irene of Athens who wielded a powerful position as the de facto ruler of the Byzantine Empire while her son, Constantine VI, was sidelined. She eventually gouged out her own son's eyes so that she could proclaim the crown to herself...

Oh there are so many woman missing in this topic :): But ill just add some of the ancient examples I do own for now:
Julia Domna, Wife of Emperor Septimius Severus, Mother of the Emperors Caracalla and Geta and honorary mother of the state, the field camp etc.:

Salonina, Wife of Emperor Gallienus, Mother of the Caesars Valerian II. and Saloninus:

Severina, Wife of Emperor Aurelian and possibly the only Empress to rule Rome in her own name for some time after the murder of her husband:

Galeria Valeria, daughter of Emperor Diocletian and wife of Emperor Galerius. She was the most honored Empress of the Tetrarchy but had a rather sad Ending - getting murdered with many other family members of the Tetrarchy after the defeat of Maximinus II. by Licinius:

Fausta, daughter of Emperor Maximian and wife of Emperor Constantin I. . She was the mother of his 3 successors but possibly had a hand in the execution in Constantins son Crispus. If we can believe the sources Constantine cooked her to death after hearing of her guilt.
