This site has a nice collection of state and world flag images.

Kingdom of Tuscany - Etruria.

It indeed was also a war flag.
I'd personally recommend this one for the Grand-Duchy of Tuscany

This one for the Papal States; seeing as it was the one used in the slideshow flag of 'Italian States'

This one for Parma

This for Lucca, whose name I suggest making '[Grand] Duchy of Lucca' (1815-1847) and separating it into that and 'Republic of Lucca', who would have the second flag, the one that looks like Poland's.

One more; for the United Provinces of Central Italy (the one that existed around 1859-60)

This one is identical to the late Sardinia-Piedmont flag, and the Kingdom of Italy's 1861-1947 flag.

Went ahead and started a thread for the German States' flags

You keep on challenging me :-)

I did some more research on the Italian wikipedia and indeed the red and yellow flag was used until 1808, succeeded by a yellow and white flag.
Hi,
If we have a flag for at least half of the Italian states (or German states), I will add them in the country list.
Feel free to build the flags directly in the right format, using basic single-color flags as template.

So reformat to 16x16, and set to .gif format?
Usually I do a bit more, so that all flags have a uniform look and feel.
For example, for the flag of papal states, I would take half of the red flag and half of the yellow flag. For the flag of United Provinces of Central Italy, I would take part of the green, white and red flags, and reduce nicely the picture of the middle part to the appropriate size.
Don't worry if you don't wish to do so, I can still take care of it.
I would rather just put it into a website that is going to resize it as 16x16 (or 17x17?) and then convert to .gif.
With there being 56 Italian states, and half needed with flags to add said flags, that means 28 are needed. And, just counting the different states with flags posted so far, there are 24 on this thread. So four more are needed!

And if anyone is interested, here are the places still needing flags:
  1. Albera
  2. Avignon, Archbishopric of
  3. Belmonte
  4. Bozzolo
  5. Cagliari
  6. Carmagnola
  7. Casale
  8. Castiglione Delle Stiviere
  9. Castro, Duchy of
  10. Corsica, Republic of
  11. Desana
  12. Firenze
  13. Fosdinovo, Marquisate of
  14. Guastalla, Duchy of
  15. Livorno
  16. Lombardy, Kingdom of
  17. Maccagno
  18. Massa Di Lunigiana
  19. Messerano
  20. Mirandola, Duchy of
  21. Pavia
  22. Perugia
  23. Piacenza, Duchy of
  24. Piedmont, Republic of
  25. Pisa, Republic of
  26. Porcia
  27. Retegno
  28. Siena Republic
  29. State of the Presidi
  30. Tassarolo
  31. Trento, Prince-bishopric of
  32. Urbino, Duchy of
Thanks, but I still need to do the formatting, which I can't do right now. But I will do it as soon as I can.

So you want this? :~ Isn't there a way to just upload the full size image and force it to display as 16x16?
Just continue posting the full size images here, it will be fine.
Cagliari

Trento

Piedmont

Urbino

Pavia

That should be enough.
Piedmont, Republic of / Subalpine Republic
Pisa, Republic of
Pisa (under House of Medici)
Porcia (arms alone)
Siena, Republic of
State of the Presidi

I resume this thread, hoping that the Italian pre-unitary States can get their flags soon.
I try to help, uploading flags that you guys did not already posted here.
Please, if there's any mistake, feel free to help fixing it!
  • Albera (as part of Contado di Cremona, since it was and still it's part of the Province of Cremona):

  • Archbishopric of Avignon (I can't find it, so I think the coat of arms of Avignon, made as a flag, can do the job);

  • Belmonte Calabro (I suggest to add "Calabro", I used the city's coat of arms making it as a flag):

  • Bozzolo (I used the city's coat of arms making it as a flag):

  • Carmagnola (I used the city's coat of arms making it as flag):

  • Casale Monferrato (it has an horizontal flag, upper half yellow and lower half red; "Monferrato" should be added next to Casale):

  • Castiglione delle Stiviere (I used the city's coat of arms making it as a flag):

  • Duchy of Castro (I used its coat of arms, found on its page on Wikipedia, making it as a flag):

  • County of Cocconato (I used the city's coat of arms making it as a flag):

  • Correggio (I used the city's coat of arms making it as a flag):

  • Corsica Republic of (Flag found on its page, on Wikipedia):

  • Desana (I used the city's coat of arms making it as a flag):

  • Firenze Republic of (I found the flag on its page on Wikipedia):

  • Fosdinovo Marquisate of (I used its coat of arms found on its page, in italian language, on Wikipedia, making it as a flag):

  • Frinco Lordship of (I used the city's coat of arms making it as a flag):

  • Lombardy (Not Kingdom of, but Provisional Government of Lombardy, flag found on its page, in italian language, on Wikipedia):

  • Maccagno (I used the city's coat of arms making it as a flag):

  • Massa di Lunigiana (I can't find it, Lunigiana it's an area that comprises also Massa, so I think the coat of arms of Massa, made as a flag, can do the job):

  • Messerano (Nowadays called Masserano, I used the city's coat of arms making it as a flag):

  • Milano Duchy of (Flag found on its page on Wikipedia, this one it's the correct one):

  • Mirandola Duchy of (Flag found on its page, in italian language, on Wikipedia):

  • Parma Duchy of (I used its flag found on its page on Wikipedia):

  • Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla Duchy of (This one should be created, separating it from Parma Duchy of; I used its flag found on its page on Wikipedia):

  • Pavia (I found it on its page on Wikipedia, this one it's the correct one):

  • Perugia (I used the city's coat of arms making it as a flag):

  • Pesaro (I used the city's coat of arms making it as a flag):

  • Piacenza Duchy of (I think should be used the same as Duchy of Parma);

  • Piedmont (Should be renamed as "Piedmontese Republic", I found it on its page on Wikipedia, this one it's the correct one):

  • Piombino Principality of (Flag found on its page on Wikipedia):

  • Pisa Republic of (Flag found on its page on Wikipedia):

  • Porcia (I used the city's coat of arms making it as a flag):

  • Tassarolo (I used the city's coat of arms making it as a flag):

No need of thanking me :`
I figured out there was some flags previously uploaded by some users which, I think, aren't correct (after a little research on Wikipedia), so I've updated my previous post including those flags improved.
If it's everything okay, now we should have all the flags, so Xavier could proceed.

Update: I figured out that I've a coin from Padova, exactly Lordship of Padova, period 1318-1405 (during the rule of Da Carrara family). This "Italian pre-unitary State" actually it's missing, so I would like to ask if it's possible to add it.
Here you can find its flag (the Padova's city flag, from Wikipedia):

Thanks in advance!

CassTaylorI'd personally recommend this one for the Grand-Duchy of Tuscany

I applied some of them to groups of rulers like here: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?e=sardinia&r=&ct=coin&im1=&im2=&tb=y&tc=y&tn=y&tp=y&tt=y&cat=y&ru=&ca=3&no=&v=&i=&b=&d=&u=&a=&dg=&m=&f=&t=&w=&mt=&g=&se=&c=&wi=&sw=&ie=

Modern flags are probably coming from Exonumia needs.
NB: some flags cannot be put in the little square shapes, for instance Parma you shared above…
