Rome and Madrid numismatic shops?

In a few days I'll be headed to either (possibly both) Rome and Madrid on holiday; currently writing in a hotel somewhere on the Italian coast on my way to the former.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for coin dealers in either city? I've already looked in the 'Coin dealers - the people's list' topic pinned to the top (someone needs to make a new topic to replace that one which hasn't been updated in YEARS), and nothing on either city there at the moment. Nothing in Outings either.

Suggestions don't necessarily have to be big fancy boutiques with a website and catalog of their own; even if they're little flea markets, or dusty covered markets selling antiques, I'll take them as long as coins/notes can be dug up by the owner and sold to me.
Two years ago I visited Rome in the same time period as you do now - all the shops were closed. The only one I've seen was not far from my hotel near the Termini station.
ROMAE AETERNAE
Depending on when you want to travel, I may be in Madrid and I can show you severals coins shops there if you want.

PM me if you are interested :-)

Thank you for the offer! At the moment I can't really say. I might decide to spend the next two weeks in Rome, or I might change direction and head for Spain in a few days' time. It is a very fascinating city so far.

Either way if you could give me some recommendations and their addresses via PM sometime in the next few days, I'd be delighted! :wiz:

I did a quick Google Maps search, and some of the indicators said 'Closed at 1:00pm'. I thought that was a very early time to close up, so maybe that is why they were closed around Christmas when you were here?
Most coin-shops in Madrid are around Plaza Mayor. On Sunday mornings there is a market in the arcades of the square.
If you are flying, there is a great coin place in the airport, but take a fair bit of money. Lots of beautiful silver coins. I bought some there last year.
I'm just a collector of coins, not a slave to it, unless I am in a coin shop.

I probably won't be flying, but it would be helpful to hear more about this place. Rome or Madrid?
Sorry for my poor message. It is Madrid airport. Amazing little shop. Could have been in there for ages and spent a fortune.

Hello Cass, while in Rome last year, I stopped in to this small place located at Via Dei Due Macelli, 106 (a couple blocks south of the Spanish Steps).. Called NUMISMATICA FILATELIA CENTRALE.. It is not the usual front door on the street to a store - the street entrance is a hallway that has a few businesses sharing the common walkway. Quite small and packed with items, I was able to find an Uncirculated Mint set of Italy's 1969 coins for my birth year set, 12 Euros, including the silver 500 Lire coin..

Sounds lovely! I got out to explore the city today, and the Spanish Steps happen to be visible from my hotel room's window. Will definitely check it out.
Forgot to mention one other place in Rome, it's a couple of blocks away from the entrance to the Vatican Museum, along the northern Vatican wall - on Via Vespasiano, 7.. another tiny door on the street, you'll miss it if you aren't careful. The store does say "Numismatica" over the door making it easy to find. Inside is tiny, I think the whole public area was maybe 4 metres x 3 metres. Cosy but still a lot of items. When I arrived, the lady was working out a deal with an Asian fellow going over some gold coins, he was paying with 200 Euros notes which was pretty impressive.. The pretty sparse website is here: http://www.pedoni.it

Side question: Are the Spanish Steps open now to the public? When we were there Sept 2016, they were closed for cleaning and repairs..
@darcy Yes the Steps are open now! Honestly not much to see though.

Anyway I visited the first shop you mentioned and the owner (Marco) was wonderful! Very hospitable and has a huge, organised selection of coins, stamps, medals and banknotes, gave me some very good prices and discounts. Would definitely recommend 11/10!
