A 1996 -D-Kennedy 1/2 Dollar was given to all employees in honor of the Company's 50th year in business. The reverse side was specially over-laid with Company Comemmorative. Was it illegal to do this? 22 years later I'm thinking maybe it was. Any help<><><><> ps- forgot to mention the coin was also gold anodized

Doesn't seem that it should be; perhaps due to some technicality in US law it is, but I dunno about that.
People carve their initials, or hobo nickel designs, or make US coins into necklaces all the time, so I hardly think the police are going to come knocking on your door either way.
I may be incorrect but the way I understand the law is that you cannot alter the US currency in any way that it would alter its perceived value. Basically you can drawl or scratch it all day long and no-one will care except maybe the wife for destroying the money. The time they start to care about you altering it is when your trying to make it look like something of more value. For example if you could come up with a way to add a additional 0 or two to your $1 bill making some uneducated person think its a $10 or even $100 bill. As far as coins go I believe I had heard a story that back with the old V nickels, some people tried to gold plate them to pass them off as the $5 gold pieces when they first came out, but that's way before my time so who knows if it's true or not.

I hope this helps and this is only how I took it.

It is, what it is, or is it.

That is absolutely true. The first issuance of the liberty V cents did not have the word cents in them. So, several scrupulous people gold plated them to pass them off as $5 gold coins. It got so bad that the US govt changed the coin to add cents on them so there are two varieties of the 1883 Liberty V cents...

The phrase "joshing" or "just joshing you" comes from that gold plated nickel.

Must be a southern phrase as, us yanks, don't use that term :P. Very interesting. Haven't heard this story before. Thanks for the tidbit...

I had a 50¢ with painted obverse of pearl harbor USS Arizona on fire that someone gave me a while back cause they knew I liked coins. I saw this post and it reminded me, so called my neighbor and he walked over and got it 10 minutes ago, he's not a coin collector but he is a WW2 history lover. So while it was worth less than 50¢ to me (although I wish I could have removed the paint, I don't have a 2014-P half) he really likes it.
