Can anyone add information to explain the weight difference between these two versions of the 5 Francs?

Is it the thickness? It can`t be the silver content only.

Piedforts are struck on thicker planchets than normal, so yes, your guess is correct.

Piedforts are really really thick, I think at least 1 or two centimeters in thickness

Piedforts are usually double the thickness of the normal coins

Apuking the normal piedfort is twice the thickness of an issued coin.
