PERRVMPENDVM - coins of Victor Friedrich von Anhalt-Bernburg

5 posts

I think I have exhausted my research capacities, at the moment.

I hope someone here can tell me what the word PERRVMPENDVM signifies on coins of Victor Friedrich von Anhalt-Bernburg. I know the meaning of the Latin word, but not what it means in this context.

In "Clavis Numismatica", G.V. Schmid explains that the word is only found on this particular prince's coins but not on any of his ancestors, or followers. But not what it is doing there. I found absolutely no clarification in any catalogues, either.

Personal motto?

I'd appreciate it if someone can enlighten me on the subject.

Thanks.

I had to post this.

But I do agree that it is probably a personal motto.

Confirmed in this latin - french translation of Caesar: https://www.prima-elementa.fr/Auteurs/Ces-cv1b.htm
perrumpendum est : il faut passer de force

Also this found here https://archive.org/stream/b21777706/b21777706_djvu.txt: On the right, Hutten in armour, and girt with his sword, and underneath the motto : " Perrumpendum est tandem, perrumpendum est." about Ulrich von Hutten

Could be the origin of Victor Friedrich motto ??

Yes, I have been there, but thanks! I think one has to read a biography of VF, which I rather hoped to avoid. Unless some kind soul has concrete prior knowledge.

Of course, many other Latin texts will have the word, not just Caesar. Although he may be the most "inspirational".
