Please look at Western Sahara, the logic is lost on me
Reunion, please look at Réunion, are we really that crazy, like lambs, just following some knowing "betters".
What I see on a coin is what I look for first.... In numista it simply doen't work all the time!
Madagascar, later Malagasy, oh boy.
Have fun, the week-end is coming.

On the coin it is nowhere written "Western Sahara"!

If you search for Republica arabe you get Western Sahara, if you search for reunion you get Réunion.
You can also look for Germany all day long on German coins.
So I also don't fully get the point.
Many of the problems I see you state in the last years stem from using the advanced search almost exclusively.

Yeah, but not in the advanced search:
So something is wrong, right?

Hello,
I changed a little bit the "Issuer" field so that typing "Reunion" will still find "Réunion". You need to empty your browser's cache or wait 1 month to see the change.
There is no plan to have "Republica arabe" match to anything. Similarly "Deutschland" will not match with "Germany".
"Republica Arabe Saharaui Democratica" is the way the name of the issuer is written on the coin, not the English name of the issuer. You may type this name in the field "Lettering" instead.

I'm happy to hear, that Reunion will be accepted in the "near" future.
Now to Western Sahara! Who knows what is really the OFFICIAL English name, so why not use what's written on the coins as well? Maybe that's to logical!
Now to Deutschland, I do agree it just has to be a synonyme for Germany, but please allow the original name to be recognized, the same goes for Danmark (Denmark), Sverige (Sweden) and Norge (Norway), Suomi (Finland), etc. A lot of new collectors aren't as clever as the "top five" of Numista, and just search what is written on the coin, I did that as well some 60 years ago , but let's make it easy for NEW collectors, otherwise our hobby is DEAD!
Amicalement

UN use Western Sahara in its resolutions and in the page about decolonization.

You and I know that, but if I happened to be a new coin collector, I'm sure I wouldn't know. Why can't we have both?

A new member most likely wouldn't have the problem because using simple search would give them their answer.

Sounds reasonable, but that means, if you don't find something with the advanced search, you'll have to double check using a simple search?

I wouldn't know because I almost never use advanced search (only when I can't read a coin e.g. arabic scribbles etc.) but I guess the answer is yes?

It would be nice to have autocorrection or a drop-down menu with suggestions in this advanced search field, so that, for example, when typing "Lietuva", it would suggest (or automatically change) it to "Lithuania", similarly with Eesti, Latvija, Deutschland, مصر etc.

Yes... and the same goes for currencies. I can not find a 2 zlote Polish coin, simply because I do not have that Polish crossed L on my keyboard.
in easy search it works, though.

This will be done, not by autocorrection, but simply by making Lithuania searchable bx Lieuva.

Hello,
It is now possible to search countries with alternative names. This works:
- on the list of countries
- in the selection of the issuer on the coin or banknote search page
- on the generic search field of the simple search.
I already entered all the alternative names suggested in the posts above and a few others. Feel free to suggest more alternative names.
