Anyone do that hobby? and have finds
I've found a dozen silver coins but mainly Victorian, my sister found a Charles I Scottish hammered silver 20 pence. I was so jealous
I wasted days of my life digging up poptops, it was probably a good thing that my metal detector burned up in a car fire, because I would still be searching to this day even though I never found anything.
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!
i can imagine in america with all the coke/pop you guys drink there everywhere, i do find alot of coins but never as old as i want when i started i thought id find loads of hammered coins but sadly i live in a victorian era built town so dont get many old find before her reign.
i need to detect further away near York or summit to find the good stuff i bet
I had a great time detecting on the beaches along my local coast line I found some great stuff musket balls bullets and coins the oldest was a 1624 french coin about the size of a farthing. I did walk miles and miles up and down the beach to find them and I also found loads of rubbish for every one good thing I found but it was great fresh air and exercise.
minelab safari is what i use it cost me £800 tho but that was several months ago so may be cheaper now. my minelab was recommended by the metal detecting website that i buy my stuff from. http://www.joanallen.co.uk/
if you like your history then its a great hobbie and if you put the time in you get some interesting items, my favorite is my HenryVII/VIII lead trade weight its circle with the stamp of there reign on it which is a crown with 3 pellets bellow it.
i went this morning for a hour and found a victorian copper coin dated 1887, something i thinks maybe a broach it has a pattern on it and a small metal leafed branch must of snapped off a bigger floral metal item.
Still a login page. when you are logged in to your album if you look down the right side of the page there is a make a link/share this album bit about halfway down.
hope that makes sense.
Dave.
I've never been metal detecting, but I've always been curious about it. TreasureNet.com got my appetite whetted enough that if I get the opportunity to buy a decent detector for cheap, I'd give it a go.
TNet also has a very active, if inane, Coin Roll Hunting community on the CRH subforum.
if anyones is willing who does the hobby to upload their finds i'd love to see them, maybe even links your finds every month would be nice to see how it's going
Great finds you guys have there, I'm a bit envious :)
zeekedeek it'd be nice to see the reverses of your coins as well, since one can only guess their face values
Very nice on the beach nice finds are few and far between lots of fishing weights ring pulls beer /pop cans. on the bright side you find loads of modern decimal coins which means after a while saving up i by a nice coin for my collection.
Dave.
I've added pictures of the back of my silver coins.
davekane I've Googled where you live and there seems to me lots of ploughed fields around your village; do you know a farmer to ask for permission?
If you fancy it we can maybe do some detecting together when I eventually pass my test
As soon as I pass my driving test hopefully my finds will get better, since I'll be able to metal detect better places than Harrogate (even tho they found the Harrogate hoard near here).
Well, it seems it is sometimes worth to play.
My kids have found a Septimus Severus denarius while playing on the beach by the Danube. So the rest of the afternoon we have spent digging the shores with their plastic "weapons", but we couldn't find any companion to it
As it is about 600 meters from my house, I still have hopes after 10 years of the event, that I'll find something. Maybe I should try with a detector!
my husband and I have been metal detecting for quite some time. It's a great way to go on an adventure and be outdoors as well. However we live in the midwest US so what we find is mostly junk. Occasionally we find coins but people tend to be leery about letting you dig on property, even public property. Too bad we don't have any real beaches around.

shame the native americans didnt have coins cos that would be great to find something older than stuff you will find with the short history of the usa.
near the mexican border there may be spanish/mexican coins? that would be pretty cool
good for all of you:)
i wanna buy detector, but here is crime if you have that thing, and if you been catch to use detector 5 years prison for you.
law says, all you can find on surface on earth is yours, all you can find 10cm deeper in ground is for state,if you dont go in museum or local office to report finding,is a crime of course
if you try to sell finding,is a big crime.
in born place of my wife, exsist many mines of gold, silver and uranium.
otomans exploating these mines about 500 years, you can find these otoman coins maked in Kratis or Kratovo, when otoman withdrawing from balkans ,they left many gold nuggets and silver hiding in mountains, many of them is still not find.

Thats seems stupid it's a crime, I think as long as you declare an important find then it should be ok.
It would be very cool to find some ottoman coins tho maybe worth the risk
In Spain, this practice is widespread, but it is dangerous, is not permitted by law, especially near where there are monuments and Roman ruins, Arabs, etc.. I do not practice, but I have friends who is passion they have for their practice, and with very good results
My friends are good numismatic. I like to make friends and share my hobby.
I collect for years, and mints. careful with these data in my swapping
Worked on an old house (old for Western U.S. anyway) and found a penny from 1920 in about 8 inches of dirt. The house happened to be built in 1920 so it was fun to imagine the original builders having a new penny fall out of their pocket while working. Then I found an old tax token that was fun to dig up.
Ultimately, I netted $0.22 from my metal detector efforts. Tough to justify the time! Rumor has it there are mormon gold pieces buried in yards around the State of Utah. Unfortunately, I was not so lucky.

im sure near the border there will be spanish/mexican coins which would be pretty cool
I always wanted to do it, but I am from Arnhem, the Netherlands and you are not allowed to use a metal detector.
This is because the enormous amount of ammunition and bombs that are still to be found in the ground.

I know the feeling, nowadays I do usually buy coin finds in bulks. I'm always interested in German states coins, but now and than I do get some interesting Roman ones.
Due to the paranoid "fakes" legends I don't even think to swap or sell them. So, I keep collecting!
Quote: demeykellyMy nephew and I wants to buy one, we are thinking to buy this one: Fisher F4. Anybody knows this brand? Or would recommend another one instead?
Hi, yes Fisher are a good make . I've never owned one but a friend I detect with has a Fisher F75 and he loves it . He's found loads of coins and artefacts with it here in England, quite a deep, sensitive machine by all accounts.
Its all down to how much you can afford, the F4 is about £330 here and the F75 about £870.
What sort of detecting are you planning to do , beach or inland ? because some detectors , and im not sure if the F4 is one of them, are no good on beaches. So do your homework and ensure you get the right one for the type of detecting you plan to do.
Let me know if I can be of any further help
Richard.

Thanks Richard. We ordered an Garrett ACE 250 instead, it's cheaper and there is some positive reviews. Planning to do inland and some beach, keeping distance from water of course.
