Cheques don't have portraits of monarchs or Coats-of-Arms on them.
Postal orders look more like banknotes - & they are often printed by the same printers as for banknotes.
Postal orders have been legal tender as currency - in both the Orange Free State & the South African Republic during the Second Boer War (1899 - 1902), & in the U.K. during both World War I & World War II.
