Hello,
There are currently 2 ways to mention you don't want to swap, configurable in your account settings:
- "I don't want to exchange temporarily (holidays, other...)": Your name still shows up on the list of people who offer a given coin for exchange and on the list of swap partners on the page "Start a swap", but with a "zzz" icon or in light blue. And there is a link to see your swap list on your profile (again with the "zzz" icon on your swap list).
- "I don't want to exchange at all for the moment.": People can't find you for a swap.
I find those two options confusing.
The original idea of the first option was that someone who really wants to get a coin which is offered only by people who are not swapping at the moment can still take a chance and contact those people, even if they know they should not expect the same availability as for people who are currently open for swaps. I'm not sure this is still valid, since many more coins are available for swaps than it used to be when the swap system was created.
Do you see good reasons to keep the first option?
If that's OK for most people here, I suggest we keep only the second option. Otherwise, I at least need to rework a little bit the display for the first option (see
here).

Hi,
I agree with you. There are a more options for a given coin to choose from, compared to 4 or 5 years ago (when I discovered the site).
It is more confusing now to have 2 options. The only premise under which these two options seem viable is when one wants to have a more regional/local swap. Like during the current pandemic situation, it is not possible (also not sensible, I believe) to swap with overseas partners or outside of any local region. So, the current op#1 gives viability and hope to swappers in a locality/region while stopping/discouraging swaps outside of the region, while the op#2 closes the swap option altogether.
Also, in case you think of removing the first option and keep the second option, I request you to help sort the available swappers for a given coin by parameters like country and ratings. It's a real pain to hover the cursor over each and every username. I remember someone starting a recent thread for this issue, but couldn't find that one now.
regards,
Soubhik.

Maybe a nice addition would also be an option "Do you want to swap internationally?" and/or differently each user could set up the countries, to which he may swap. Many members are swapping only locally because of high post costs, so there is no need to see coins from these swap lists, if the swap is not going to materialize anyway.
Single option for just being away is better/clearer. No need to say you are on honeymoon.

I agree that things have change a lot over time and these options need some rework.
I could think of a few options or variations:
- I do not swap! - don't show the name anywhere with regards to swapping, don't allow anyone to see my swap list
- I may consider a swap - feel free to contact or open a swap but don't expect quick response, allow people to see my swap list but display the name in a different colour (light blue as it is now, I guess) - this option is a bit questionable I guess but I think we need one not as "harsh" as the first one so at least people can see one's swap list
- I'm swapping only within my country - self-explanatory
- I'm swapping only within my continent - self-explanatory
- Actively swapping and open for any kinds of swaps
I'd suspect that the logic for #4 would not be trivial but considering what Numista already has for the map I don't see it too challenging.
Anyways, this is just a thought.

I agree with mikimaus. You've got a viable point. Then each swapper will give out his/her location preferences for swapping. And when they match with a potential swapper, the swap list will show the username of the matches. Then the website will become much more self-customisable and localised, as per user needs, ie, sorting the swappers by nation.
Like for example, I'm from India (Calcutta, WB). It is not financially viable for me to swap with users from most of the nations. My most preffered ones will be say, India (ofc), Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and maybe UK/Europe (sometimes we have cheap courier charges, seasonal offers). So, I'll be viewing users having a given coin for swap as per the nations in my preference. But in no way will it block me from confirming an odd swap with some collector from (say) Thailand or Singapore. I just won't see them in the first place- but there's always the map for those who want it.

I considered the first indication as 'I am unavailable for the moment but you can send me your proposal, I will answer it later'
and the other 'no exchange possible, no requests'
Many members put their exchange conditions on their profile either in "he collects" or in "he wants""
I think of a section of the profile with the name to define to indicate: I sell, I buy, I exchange, under what conditions, where, how ... etc

A rather simple solution could be to leave the two options as they are, but to describe them more informatively, so as in the first post of this thread.

-that's what I did after nosing about here a bit & observing the customs of more veteran members of Numista

I agree & believe it is fine as it is. I actually thought the 2 options were pretty straightforward & decided to select both only because I wasn't sure where you were going to go with it (eliminate the 1 option?)
I just don't want to swap due to the current incapacity of the postal systems to deliver in a timely manner - as a result of the pandemic. (Until I start seeing all of my outstanding packages arrive I will not be engaging in any swaps)

Hello,
I started to describe more accurately what each option is doing on the account settings page.
The next step is to also better describe on the various pages where members offering coins for swap are displayed.

When I go out from home in Summer time, always I select the 1st option (
I don't want to exchange temporarily). Really I never used the 2nd (
I don't want to exchange at all for the moment).
---------
About countries and conditions for swap... I prefer my country or my continent, due postal costs. And registered mail to all world with biggest swaps (300-500 grams). Now I write this in field
What I want of my profile
QuoteDue to postal costs, I only send letters up to 100g (to Europe by non-registered mail) or from 300g to 500g (to all world by registered mail).
Despite this, I continue to receive offers of small swaps from other continents. Because of this, some weeks ago I added this:
QuoteYou do not ask me for small swaps outside Europe, please!
It would be nice to be able to add this information with more specific fields in my profile. For example, a new field
Shipping preferences. And this should be shown in several pages: my profile, swap page with a person, page for get more coins or banknotes from other person...
