Feeling Guilty

I like to collect Crown Size coins , judging by the very few swops I get , I don’t think there are too many Numista Collectors who collect or swap them.

Therefore My only source to increase my collection , is to buy them on eBay which is an expensive undertaking. So to fund these purchases , I have Been selling some of my collection (and my Dads legacy ) .

The trouble is , I always feel guilty when I do this , as if I’m not being true to the spirit of coin collecting especially as a lot of collectors probably deem what Im selling as more valuable and worthy (given their age ) than what I’m purchasing .

I hope my Grandchildren will, when older , take over my collection, but in the meantime , I am sure I’m not alone
in focusing on the coins I like rather than looking over old coins from France and Portugal for example .

I know all of you will have views , and can reassure me I’m not doing anything wrong .
I collect coins I like some turn out to be more valuable than others but as I don't collect for the value but for the enjoyment so what you are doing is ok if you are happy with what you are doing it doesn't matter what any body else thinks My favourite coin is a 1842 silver Victorian 3p very worn with a little hole in it my farther gave it to me when I was 7 started me collecting its Priceless but value wise not very much so keep collecting and enjoy.
I also have a big collection of Crowns and Crown size Coins UK,I.O.M, Canada etc. Both in Silver and Cupro Nickle
and find if you look hard enough you will find them at a price that's reasonable but beware with eBay as there are a lot of Conmen missdiscribing coins as Silver or Rare when they are Cupro Nickle eg 1953 Crown in Silver the Royal mint never issued the 1953 Coronation Crown in Silver and minted around 6 million of them so they are far from Rare .
Thanks , Ian

I started collecting very late , but like you the start was from coins my Dad left me.
Hi iknw07554,

Your father's collection is in your hands now, and I think he will be happy that he managed to give the spirit of collecting through to you. Don't feel ashamed that you have different ideas on collecting than he did - by pursueing your own collecting ideas you are equally improving the quality of the collection. A collection is a living thing anyhow.

You could keep a few a nice coins of the original collection as a commemoration to your father.

I myself started collecting as a kid, but was heavily sponsored by my dad. I had no clear collecting scope back then, and my father's generosity allowed me to acquire quite a lot of non-circulating commemoratives and pre-1900 coins.
When I was between the age of 18 and 35, my collection slept, and when I picked up collecting again, I redefined my collecting scope. Some categories of coins didn't fit that scope any more. So, I started swapping them all away for coins that did fit my new scope, but decided to keep a few, for oddity's sake or in memory of my father.
So, for instance, out of a dozen of Austrian commemorative 25-50-100 shillings, I kept only the one commorating the composer A. Bruckner, of which my father was a great fan.
Hi Arnov,

A lovely response and perfectly answered my reservations .

I will do exactly that , Keep some from my Dad as well as building up my collection taste.

When I leave them to my Grandchildren, they will have a starting point for whatever way they choose.

Keep safe
Like you guys, I also love collecting crown sized coins, and again like you, there is not a lot of them around, unless you to onto eBay, where they are expensive.
Unlike some of you, my collection is totally mine, so I started it, so do not need to have this guilt complex.
I only have one slight rule which I have never broken:- Once it is in my collection, it stays in my collection, so I suppose this is my guilt complex.
I am very glad I do not have to sell something that was my fathers/grandfsthers, as I have no idea if I could do it, so my sympathies are with you when you have to make there momentous decisions.
May I wish you all:- Happy crown hunting
I have a few to swap but they are probably the more common types
I'm just a collector of coins, not a slave to it, unless I am in a coin shop.

Hi All,

I’ve mentioned this before , I know there is a group that collectors can join that specialise in Bi Metallic coins , wouldn’t it be great if there was a group for us Crown Collectors.

I even thought perhaps (with everyone in lockdown at home ) someone at Numista could facilitate one !.

happy coin hunting
