Add or modify a mint in the catalogue

Definition

Mints are workshops or industrial facilities that manufacture coins or coin-like exonumia items. The Numista mint database records the name, location, and operational dates of mints. It also list the mintmarks, that is the symbols engraved on coins or tokens symbolizing the mint, and also other marks which are symbols of specific people who had a role in this mint all along its history.

How to request the addition of a new mint?

Please post a request on the forum indicating:

  • if known, the official name of the mint in English, as well as in the local language, in French, and in Spanish (for example, Bulgarian Mint = Монетен двор = Monnaie de Bulgarie = Casa de la moneda de Bulgaria)
  • its Wikidata code (for example, Q4916754 for Birmingham mint)
  • its Nomisma ID
  • its location and country (in English, French, Spanish and the local language)
  • the modern-day location, if it is different from the ancient location of the mint
  • GPS latitude and longitude coordinates. Here is a simple online tool that can help you get the numeric values of the coordinates.
  • operation dates. Dates may include breaks, in which case indicate the dates by intervals. For example: 850-950, 1280-1628.
  • official website for modern mints
  • if there are no entries yet on Numista, the link to an auction site or a reference catalogue presenting at least one coin from this mint
  • if they already exist, the link of one or more Numista records that you want to link with this mint
  • if possible, a brief introduction presenting the history of this mint. Give some sources that document the existence of this mint. Ideally printed catalogues, scans, or several reputable online sources.

It is not required to provide all the information above. However, complete requests can be verified and added to the database quicker by the catalogue admins.

How to attach a missing mintmark to a mint?

Please post a request on the forum indicating:

  • the mint (copy the link from Numista to avoid misunderstandings)
  • a black and white image of the mark (SVG, PNG, or JPG 200 ⨯ 200 pixels)

For other types of marks (mintmaster marks, die letters, etc.), follow the instructions here.
