Over the centuries, its waterways have contributed to the mercantile spirit of the Dutch.
A centuries-old tradition is 'skûtsjesile'. 'Skûtsjes' are sailing barges built to carry freight over the narrow, shallow waters of Friesland.
Formerly, races were held to demonstrate to potential clients which 'skûtsje' was the fastest for the purpose of freight transport.
Even after the 'skûtsje' had been replaced as a cargo carrier, the tradition of 'skûtsjesile' was continued.
