Comments
During World War II, the Bank of England issued special banknotes to prevent forgery, conserve resources, and maintain economic stability. Smaller denomination notes, such as £1 and 10 shillings, were introduced with enhanced security features to counter Nazi attempts at mass counterfeiting (Operation Bernhard). These notes ensured a secure currency supply, boosted public confidence, and supported the wartime economy amidst material shortages and financial uncertainty.
Incorporated metal thread for first time: permanent feature since 1948.
