Notes of this series were issued in uncut sheets five notes wide and five notes long (5x5). Notes in their original uncut sheets are worth a premium over those that have been cut out.

Specimen Notes

Specimen notes of this series are uni-faced, both obverse and reverse, in uncut sheets five notes wide and one note long (5x1). The uncut sheets feature “ОБРАЗЕЦ” as a perforation twice.

History of the Note

These notes were issued in accordance with the 4 of February, 1919 decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR (CPC). Their issuance was initially carried out by the People's Bank until it was abolished. Issuance was continued until the beginning of 1921 by the Budget and Settlement Department of the People's Commissariat of Finance, in accordance with the 19 of January, 1920 decree of the CPC.

According to the decree of the CPC on 28 of June, 1922, these notes were to be discontinued from issuance on 1 of July, 1922. Exchanges were to be made at a rate of 10,000 to 1 1922 rouble by 1 of October, 1922; however, the date was later extended to 1 of November, 1922 by decree of the CPC on 28 of September, 1922. These notes' withdrawl from circulation began in mid-1921.

These notes were the first to feature the new state emblem of the Soviet Republic.

A total of 1471.3 million roubles were issued, all in uncut sheets of 25 roubles each. In 1922, 200.4 million were not exchanged of the 1919 and 1921 issues combined.

Oryol Seal Printing Technique

This note was printed using a variant of offset printing called an “Oryol Seal”, created by Ivan Ivanovich Orlov. It combines ink from several templates, transfers them to a main shaft, and prints the design without any overlaps or gaps between colours.
