The statue of Arminius depicted on this note stands atop the Hermann Memorial (Hermannsdenkmal in German). Built between 1838 and 1875 outside Detmold, it was constructed to commemorate the Cherusci war chief Arminius and his victory over the Romans at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD.
