Half-length facing bust of King James I, armoured and holding sword in right hand, royal shield on left arm, in ship sailing left, I on flag set on forecastle.

Translation: James by the Grace of God King of Great Britain, France and Ireland

Reverse

Floriated cross with lis at end of each limb and rose on sun in centre, crowned lion passant left in angles, all within tressure of eight arches with trefoils in spandrels.

When first issued, the spur-ryal was valued at 15 shillings but in 1612 all the gold coins had their values raised by 10% and this coin became 16s. 6d.
