The fourth and final Edwina Ellis bridge design, representing England, the Millennium Bridge in Gateshead is a pedestrian and cyclist tilt bridge spanning the River Tyne in the north-east of England between Gateshead's Quays arts quarter on the south bank, and the Quayside of Newcastle upon Tyne on the north bank. Opened for public use in 2001, the award-winning structure was conceived and designed by architect Wilkinson Eyre and structural engineer Gifford.
Issued individually, the coin was also struck in copper-nickel, silver proof and silver piedfort, while the 2008 piece was issued in a 14-piece set to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the £1 coin and was also struck in silver proof with selective gold plating.
