The scallop shell is a symbol of the Way of Saint James, which is a network of pilgrims' ways or pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle James the Great in the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in northwestern Spain, where tradition holds that the remains of the apostle are buried. A section of the Way of Saint James passes through the city of Burgos.
