As the population in the Ruhr area grew in the early 19th century, it was determined that the District of Hagen in Westfalia was too large.
On April 1, 1887, the western portion of the District of Hagen was separated, and a new district was formed with its seat in the town of Schwelm. This District of Schwelm was in existence until 1929.
