Benjamin Morrell, an American sailor of the early 1800s who, in his memoirs, "A Narrative of Four Voyages to the South Sea, North and South Pacific Ocean, Chinese Sea, Ethiopic and Southern Atlantic Ocean, Indian and Antarctic Ocean, from the Year 1822 to 1831" , invented islands, principally Byers Island in the North Pacific. He wrote that he landed there in July 1825. Its position would be 28.53°N 177.07°E , placing it between Hawaii and Japan, along the Tropic of Cancer.
Byers is the name of the ship's owner and one of Morrell's employers, who sacrificed his scientific reputation in the process.
