In order to encourage the improvement of horse breeding, King Oscar II issued a decree on the first of November 1872, stating that a special reward medal should be awarded by Stuteri överstyrelsen (stud farm executive board) at annual meetings, to owners of proven young horses, who were considered worthy of being awarded a prize
When the mint in Stockholm minted these medals (1875-1939), the silver medals were awarded in a simple colored square box with a sliding lid, and sometimes with the name of the horse, and the year the medal was awarded written on.
Weight typically varies between 37,6 to 38,4 g
There are three variants of this medal.
Type 1:
Reverse signature as “L.A.”, no dot after “KONUNG” on obverse
Type 2:
Reverse signature as “L.A.”, dot after “KONUNG” on obverse
Type 3:
Reverse signature as “LEA AHLBORN”, dot after “KONUNG” on obverse
