Comments

Issued after the great famine started in 1783, at 125 Ryō of scrips for 100 Ryō of gold. However, due to resist merchants, the scrip devalued to 1/50 of original value by just half year, and the domain had to give up. Sendai domain tried to buy rice from other domains (such as Owari or Mogami), but failed, expanding famine greatly.

天保定爾 is part of Book of Poetry 詩經 → Minor odes of the kingdom 小雅 → Decade Of Lu Ming 鹿鳴之什 → 166 Tian Bao 天保. Translation by James Legge.
