This immense church dedicated to the Virgin Mary stands alone on a hill overlooking the landscape. It was built in the 1920s on the site of a chapel where, in 1883, the Virgin Mary is said to have spoken to a Gozitan woman named Carmela Grima, hence the pilgrimage site. Elevated to the status of a basilica in 1931, it is Malta's only national shrine.
