Vabalathus facing right, armoured and cuirassed, laureate bust with lettering around.
Script: Latin
Lettering: VABALATHVS V C R IM D R
Unabridged legend: Vabalathus Vir Clarissimus Rex Imperator Dux Romanorum
Translation: Vabalathus, Most renowned man, King, of Imperatorial rank, Commander of the Romans
This coin is thought to have been issued between 270 and 272, when Vaballathus was King of the Palmyrene Kingdom. The reverse inscription was struck admitting vassalage, but the ambiguity created by the double obverse could only have worked his favour especially as his father had not minted coins in his own name at all.
After being conquered in 272, he is thought to have died on his way to Rome. Unique in collections.
