Comments

Around 50 are thought to exist. Almost all, if not all, are from the Climping Hoard. Only a fraction of the hoard was declared by the metal detecting rally that found it and archaeological evidence was destroyed.

Allen Type: British L.

Van Arsdell Classification: Trinovantian D, Later Uninscribed Gold Coins, Whaddon Chase Type, Climping Variety.

Rudd (ABC) attributes this coin to the Regni and suggests it was struck at the same time as Early Waddon Chase staters (ABC 2433, 2436, 2439).

Sills DK 194 (1 obverse, 1 reverse die): Early Southern Local Issues; North Thames Derivatives; Staters: Climping. A reversed, left-facing copy of British La, Whaddon Chase (ABC 2433). Comb-like hair curls and ringed pellet below the horse are as on Classes 1 and 2 of British La. Wreath has ‘downward’ leaves (inside end of each leaf pointing upwards). The S (backward-looking animal) above the horse replaces the frond on the Whaddon Chase. The style of the small animals is as on the Diadem Head (ABC 551), which is probably the equivalent quarter. See CCI 12.0259.
Sills DK 195 (1 obverse, 1 reverse die): as Sills 194 but inside end of each leaf above the hairbar points downwards, and inside end of each leaf below the hairbar points upwards. See CCI 04.0292.

Sills chronology: Gallo-Belgic Ca - Insular Cf / Aa Westerham - British Ad - British Q and L - North Thames Derivatives.
