Allen Type: British Lb.

Van Arsdell Classification: Icenian B, Icenian Early Uninscribed Gold and Silver Coins, Snettisham Type. Previously attributed to the Trinovantes/Catuvellauni as a Late Whaddon Chase Type (VA 1505 - 01), but now identified as an early Icenian issue by John Talbot. Van Arsdell lists two variants:
VA 615 - 01: Cornucopia opens clockwise. Horse's tail of two lines, four pellets above horse's neck. This is COI 33g.
VA 615 - 03: Cornucopia opens anti-clockwise. Horse's tail of one line, three pellets above horse's neck. This is COI 33f.

Talbot Snettisham. The denominational period started with higher purity gold (after the debasement of the Wolf B) and is stylistically linked to early local period silver, with Snettisham similar to Large Flan A. It also has similar elements to the Catuvellaunian Whaddon Chase. Struck at Mint A, which was responsible for most gold and used the most dies, characterised by a horse with an open head. The Snettisham stater is associated with the Early Snettisham quarter, the Odin's Eye 1 unit and the Barley half unit.

Talbot Chronology: Gallo-Belgic E/Ingoldisthorpe - Early Local Period I (55BC-35BC) - Early Local Period II (35BC-15BC) - Denominational Period I (15BC-5: Snettisham - Plouviez - Irstead - Early Boar Horse) - Denominational Period II (5-25: Boar Horse B - Boar Horse C) - Denominational Period III (25-45).

Cottam and Rudd list two types:
COI 33f (ABC 1411; VA 615-03) - Snettisham Curl and Open Head (33 known): Ringed pellet below horse.
COI 33g (VA 615-01) - Snettisham Curl and Cogwheel (5 known): Ringed pellet inside pellet ring below horse (see Chris Rudd's ‘Fewer Pellets Type with Pellet-Triad’, Chris Rudd List 141, 6 July 2015, lot 16).
COI 33 is split across Snettisham (ABC 1408), Snettisham Wreath and Spiral (ABC 1402), Snettisham Cross and Loop (ABC 1405) and Snettisham Curl.

Cottam and Rudd Chronology: Gallic War Unity (55-50BC) - Post-War Austerity (50-35BC) - Peaceful Prosperity (35BC-20) - Client-State Conformity (20-47) - Claudian Regality (43-47).
