Comments

Van Arsdell ‘Bury B’. Van Arsdell Classification: Icenian A, Icenian Earliest Uninscribed Silver Coins, Bury Type.

Chris Rudd (ABC) ‘Norfolk Diadem’.

Talbot Bury B. Followed Bury A and Bury C, and towards the end of Large Flan A and Large Flan C. Large Flan A (from the Waveney valley) and Large Flan C (from around Breckland) have a similar horse and large, deeply-dished flan, which like Bury B (from Saham Toney-Crownthorpe) demonstrate the Chimirri-Russell effect, where both sides forming a face when viewed sideways on (possibly why some have so many ornaments in the field). Early dies have a diamond on both sides, which later is a hollow star. Bury B was produced  at several sites with relatively low intensity.

Talbot Chronology: Gallo-Belgic E/Ingoldisthorpe - Early Local Period I (55BC-35BC) - Early Local Period II (35BC-15BC) - Denominational Period I (15BC-5: Snettisham - Plouviez - Irstead - Early Boar Horse) - Denominational Period II (5-25: Boar Horse B - Boar Horse C) - Denominational Period III (25-45).

Cottam and Rudd list eight types:
COI 8a - Norfolk Diadem Small Wheel, Pellet Hub (21 known): Spoked wheel with beaded rim and pellet hub above horse, hollow star below. Compare COI 8d, 8e and 8g.
COI 8b (ABC 1501) - Norfolk Diadem Big Beaded Ring (13 known): Big beaded ring around ringed pellet above horse.
COI 8c - Norfolk Diadem Gappy Ring (8 known): Beaded ring with large gaps between pellets around ringed pellet above horse.
COI 8d - Norfolk Diadem Ringed Pellet Hub (3 known): Spoked wheel with beaded rim and ringed pellet hub above horse. Compare COI 8a, 8e and 8g.
COI 8e - Norfolk Diadem Pin Cushion (4 known): Spoked wheel with beaded rim and ringed pellet hub (pellet almost fills ring) with large pellets (like a pin cushion) above horse. Compare COI 8a, 8d and 8g.
COI 8f - Norfolk Diadem Two Beaded Rings (6 known): Pellet inside two beaded rings above horse.
COI 8g - Norfolk Diadem Big Wheel, Beaded Hub (20 known): Spoked wheel with beaded rim and beaded ringed pellet hub above horse. Compare COI 8a, 8d and 8e.
COI 8h - Norfolk Diadem Long Mane (3 known): Spoked wheel with beaded rim and pellet hub above horse with very long dashes for mane.

There is a variant (Talbot Group 4, obverse F, reverse 17) with a pellet in triangle with pellet corners above the horse and a spoked wheel with pellet rim below (CCI 17.0414, see ‘Norfolk Diadem Delta’, Chris Rudd List 145, 12 February 2016, lot 20). The style is poor such that it might be a counterfeit.
