Comments

The exact nature of the so-called “pattern” coins of the Macedonian dynasty is unclear. The tradition attribution of the coinage as pattern coins has been questioned in recent years both due to the relative abundance of the coinage and the multitude of dies used for the issues, which one would not expect from a simple pattern emission. To this uncertainty adds the existence of a partially gilded and partially silvered emission, though it's unclear whether the plating was added at the mint or after the fact. Another possibility is that the coins were tesserae or tokens issued for an unclear purpose, which would better explain the existence of multiple die pairs for each emission.
