Comments

The obverse is convex, while the reverse is concave with a hole in the center for a fixing pin. Only a couple of occurrences of this medal were found online, one in Arizona & one in Canada. Given Louis Riel's extensive history in both Manitoba & Canada more generally, it is indexed as Canadian. A small “KL” exists at the bottom of the bust, above the R of Riel.

In 1885, Louis Riel, the Métis leader, played a central role in the North-West Rebellion, a conflict that arose from Métis and First Nations grievances against the Canadian government regarding land rights and self-governance. The rebellion, which took place in present-day Saskatchewan and Alberta, saw Riel leading a provisional government and engaging in armed conflict with Canadian forces. Ultimately, the rebellion was suppressed, and Riel was captured, tried for treason, and executed.
