Comments

Eimer: The List of Fellows of the Zoological Society of London (1957) records the number of medals awarded: five in gold for special services; fifty-nine in silver, twenty-two in bronze (for keepers). The design was approved in 1837 and the first medal awarded was in 1847.

Only seven gold have been awarded to date (1987), the first in 1877 to the Prince of Wales. The silver awarded since 1847 for various reasons contributing to zoology. The bronze is awrded to keepers and other members of staff for outstanding care in rearing animals or for long and meritious service. (Pinches)
