To mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America, a series of collector coins is being issued. Under this theme, and reflected in the coin designs, the Spanish contribution to the success of the war in favour of the Thirteen American Colonies will be highlighted. Key figures such as King Charles III of Spain and the first President of the United States, George Washington, together with General Bernardo de Gálvez, Admiral Luis de Córdova and others, added to the enormous financial and logistical support provided by Spain, which took the form of huge sums of silver eight-real coins, the Spanish Milled Dollar, the origin of the first American dollar.

The first coin in the 2025 issue features one of the greatest icons of American culture since its inception on the obverse: the American bald eagle. On this side of the coin, a coloured image of the bird in flight with its wings spread, alluding to its symbolism as an element of authority, power and freedom. Precisely what the American people achieved. It also does so above the flags of both peoples, twinned since their inception.
On the other side of the coin, we can see the two highest leaders of Spain and the then fledgling United States of America: Charles III of Spain and George Washington. Both leaders played important roles during the War of Independence of the United States. While the former supported the cause against the other great power of the time, Great Britain, the latter led the Continental Army as commander-in-chief to victory against the British, emerging victorious from such decisive battles as Trenton, Princeton and Yorktown.
