Series: Orthodox holidays
The biblical story of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary is depicted. The composition includes key figures:
The central figure is the Blessed Virgin Mary: depicted lying on her deathbed, covered with a cloth—a symbol of a peaceful death.
The figure of Jesus Christ (at the top of the composition): depicted surrounded by angels—symbolizes the moment of the Virgin Mary's soul's ascension to heaven;
The apostles around the Virgin Mary's bed: depicted in poses of sorrow, prayer, and reverence. Some hold their hands in prayer, while others bow in sorrow—reflecting the disciples' grief at their separation from the Mother of God.
The image of flame or smoke symbolizes prayer ascending to heaven, or the soul leaving the body;
The inscription is placed along the top edge of the medal. The font is classical, harmonizing with the overall style of the image.
Script: Cyrillic
Lettering: УСПЕНИЕ БОГОРОДИЦЫ
Translation: DORMITION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
The image depicts the Orthodox eight-pointed cross—one of the most recognizable symbols in the Christian tradition, especially in the Russian Orthodox Church.
Eight-pointed shape:
three crossbars:
the upper short crossbar symbolizes the plaque bearing the inscription "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" (INRI), affixed by order of Pilate;
the middle long crossbar is the main crossbar, to which Christ's hands were nailed;
the lower diagonal crossbar is the footstool, symbolizing the path of salvation for humanity: the upper end points to paradise (for the repentant thief), the lower end to hell (for the unrepentant).
The letters "IC" and "XC" are an abbreviation of "Jesus Christ" in Greek (Ιησούς Χριστός). They are traditionally placed at the ends of the middle crossbar.
The mint mark is located at the bottom.
