Lübeck, officially the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, is the second most populous city in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, in northern Germany, after Kiel. The medieval city center was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, notably for its brick buildings in the Baltic Gothic style, such as the Holsten Gate.
