Saxe-Altenburg, in present-day eastern Thuringia, was part of the Margraviate of Meissen in the Middle Ages. After the division of the margraviate in 1485, Saxe-Altenburg became part of Ernestine Saxony. In 1672, the Saxe-Altenburg line died out, and the duchy fell to Saxe-Gotha. Saxe-Altenburg only regained its independence in 1826. In 1871, the duchy became a constituent state of the German Empire.
