325 medals were created in each of three plated varieties (gold, silver & copper) and 75 were minted in the solid silver type.
The emblem shown on the obverse, of the Société Numismatique de Québec, was chosen in 1960. The original design was created by Joseph Légaré. It was also the emblem on the first seal of Quebec City, and the same design was used on tokens issued by the Banque de Québec in 1852.
