The 1988 locust plague began as desert locust swarms bred in northern Africa, crossed the Sahara, and invaded all the Sahelian countries from Mauritania to Sudan. The swarms subsequently spread to northwest Africa and the Near East. The plague also resulted in locusts crossing the Atlantic and reaching the Caribbean for the first time in recorded history.
